Russia has agreed to take around 70,000 Indian skilled workers this year: Govt tells parliamentary panel
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told a parliamentary consultative committee that Russia had agreed to accept around 70,000 Indian skilled workers in 2026, especially in construction and logistics. The meeting also covered balanced trade, energy ties, Ukraine and India’s peace efforts.

The Centre is considering the 800 MW Sawalkot hydroelectric project on the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir while the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty remains in abeyance after the 2025 Pahalgam attack. The ₹5,129-crore NHPC project spans Udhampur, Reasi and Ramban districts.

Sawalkot is an NHPC hydroelectric project planned on the Chenab River in Udhampur, Reasi and Ramban districts.
The Sawalkot project is reported to cost ₹5,129 crore and have an electricity-generation capacity of 800 MW.
Pakistan raised objections to Sawalkot in July 2025 and February 2026 and sought consultation with India.
Ratle, Pakal Dul, Kiru and Kwar were identified by the Union Power Secretary as major J&K hydropower projects progressing well.
