The subject-wise NCERT set for Prelims, with every title and class checked against the official NCERT textbook portal in July 2026 — including what the NCF 2023 rollout has actually replaced so far. Most circulating booklists still cite titles that no longer exist for classes 6–9.

NCF 2023 rollout — what has actually been replaced
NCERT is replacing textbooks class-by-class under the National Curriculum Framework 2023. Status on the official portal as of 15 July 2026:

Practical takeaway for aspirants: the UPSC-critical class 10–12 set is untouched, so no existing preparation is invalidated — but if you are buying class 6–9 basics, buy the new NCF titles.

- For classes 10–12 — the core of the UPSC set — yes: those titles are unchanged and carry 2026-27 reprints on ncert.nic.in. For classes 6–9, NCERT has replaced the old books under NCF 2023 (Exploring Society, Understanding Society, Curiosity, Exploration), so buy the new titles there.
- Which NCERTs are most important for UPSC Prelims?
- The class 11–12 set carries most Prelims weight: Indian Constitution at Work (polity), Themes in Indian History I–III, Fundamentals of Physical Geography and India Physical Environment, Indian Economic Development and Introductory Macroeconomics, plus An Introduction to Indian Art for culture.
- Have NCERT books changed for 2026?
- Yes, for the middle classes: Class 9 got new Social Science (Understanding Society: India and Beyond, Part I, June 2026) and Science (Exploration, April 2026) textbooks, continuing the NCF 2023 rollout that already replaced classes 6–7 and partially class 8. Classes 10–12 are unchanged.
- Is there a Part II of the new Class 8 Social Science book?
- Not on ncert.nic.in as of July 2026 — only “Exploring Society: India and Beyond, Part I” is published for Class 8, and the older books remain listed on the portal alongside it.
- Is An Introduction to Indian Art Part II real?
- Yes. It is a Class 12 Fine Arts textbook (first edition August 2020, reprint 2026-27), verified from its title page on ncert.nic.in — despite many booklists claiming only Part I exists.
- Should I read NCERTs before standard reference books?
- Yes — NCERTs build the base vocabulary that PYQs assume, and a large share of Prelims questions can be answered from them directly. Read the class 11–12 books for your weaker subjects first, then drill chapter-wise MCQs to convert reading into marks.
